The SAT and ACT are a big deal. Not only are they major parts of most college applications, but strong SAT and ACT scores can connect students to scholarship opportunities and affect access to college credit. With stakes so high, targeted preparation is essential for even the brightest student.
I believe that with the right combination of foundation and function – writing can be a powerful form of communication for anyone. I start by laying the groundwork for students to express themselves creatively, all the while ensuring that they adhere to the standard English conventions that make their work strong and coherent. We walk through each step of the writing process — from idea generation to revision — as a multipurpose tool for both academic and creative writing.
Instead of a generic, one-size-fits-all program, I assess strengths and weaknesses for each individual student. Each session targets areas where improvements will have the greatest impact on test scores, with special consideration for student learning style and preferred learning environment.
1. DIAGNOSTIC TEST
Upon intake, each student completes a full-length diagnostic test.
Together, we determine the student's strengths, weaknesses, and areas for greatest improvement using an analysis of the diagnostic test results.
3. PROGRAM CREATION
A custom curriculum is designed to enable the student to target the areas in greatest need of improvement.
4. SESSION STRUCTURE
Instruction and homework target three key areas: content review, test taking strategies, and simulated test practice.
5. STREAMLINED FEEDBACK
Parents receive progress reports after each tutoring session, which provides practice test scores and feedback, homework assignments, and future scheduling information.
The writing process can be an overwhelming task for many students. While they may have good ideas and the ability to share them verbally, they struggle to put those ideas onto paper due to difficulties with critical thinking skills, the basic rules of organization and structure, idea organization, and stress management. These challenges can result in a tremendous amount of frustration, a lack of confidence, and even a downright unwillingness to write. I empathize with and personally understand the stress writing challenges can pose for both students and their parents, and go the extra mile to provide the motivation, support, and strategies to help students become successful writers.
My tutoring strategy centers around several key elements:
THE WRITING PROCESS
Students are introduced to the steps of the writing process, including brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, proofreading, and finalizing their work.
GRAMMAR & PUNCTUATION
Through explicit instruction, students master standard English conventions by breaking down the (somewhat confusing) English language into manageable rules and procedures. As they demonstrate independent mastery of a concept, students are challenged to implement it in their own writing before moving on to a new skill.
Spelling, syllabification, and scholarly citations are just a few of the many topics we cover
in the Enrichment portion of our writing program. As with Grammar and Punctuation, students are encouraged to apply these concepts in their own compositions.
